Alejandro Carnicer Lombarte

Presidential Assistant Professor

BA (University of Cambridge), BEng (OU), MSc (UCL), PhD (University of Cambridge)

Alejandro obtained his Bachelor’s (Natural Sciences) and Master’s (Neuroscience) degrees from the University of Cambridge in 2013 and University College London in 2014. He then carried out his PhD at the University of Cambridge, Department of Clinical Neurosciences under the supervision of Prof. James Fawcett and Prof. Kristian Franze, which he obtained in 2018. He later joined the laboratory of Prof. George Malliaras at the Department of Engineering, University of Cambridge as a postdoctoral researcher before joining CityU in 2026. He also holds a Bachelor’s degree (Engineering) from the Open University. His research interests are the development of neurotechnologies such as implantable electrode arrays and biohybrid regenerative technologies for use in the peripheral nervous system, and in their application to restore function following injury.

Carlos Iglesias

Senior Research Assistant

BSc (Technical University of València UPV), MSc (Miguel Hernández University of Elche)

Carlos Iglesias is a Senior Research Assistant in the Department of Biomedical Engineering at City University of Hong Kong, where he is setting up the group's biohybrid neural interfaces lab. These interfaces combine microfabricated electrodes with living cells to improve tissue integration and long-term stability. He received his BSc in Biomedical Engineering from the Technical University of València and his MSc in Biotechnology and Bioengineering from Miguel Hernández University of Elche, where his thesis studied how neurons and glia respond to acute microstimulation of the primary visual cortex. He then joined IMTEK at the University of Freiburg as a research assistant, where he designed and built a stereotactic inserter for flexible neural probes. At Chalmers University of Technology, he then designed and microfabricated a flexible, MR-visible brain probe targeting the lateral geniculate nucleus (LGN) to restore visual function. Most recently, at the National Hospital for Paraplegics, he used optogenetics and calcium imaging to study how astrocytes contribute to neuronal encoding in the somatosensory cortex. His interests include tissue-compliant neural interfaces and their translation to the clinic.

Shiyu Wu

Research Assistant

BSc (Guangdong Medical University), MSc (City University of Hong Kong)

Shiyu is a Research Assistant with an interest in neuroscience and understanding the complexities of the nervous system. His research interests include application of implantable devices interfacing with peripheral nerves, exploring and decoding the neural mechanism inside brain through electrophysiology, and Brain Computer Interface. Outside the lab, he likes skateboarding and videogames.
